Credentialing Locum Tenens Physicians

As an inaugural Strategic Corporate Partner, CompHealth, a leader in both locum tenens and permanent physician staffing, collaborated with ASPR on a research project to better understand the common pain points in credentialing locum tenens physicians. Credentialing is different in every facility, however, there are common challenges faced by most. A total of 376 people responded to the research project, with responsibilities in recruiting, credentialing, on-boarding and retention of locum tenens physicians.

Common Pain Points:

  • Incomplete/inaccurate paperwork which is critical to the process
  • Ineffective communication from agency during process or agency not understanding the facility's process
  • Time delays in the process

Ideas:

  • Consider senior recruitment staff oversight instead of junior staff
  • Monitor total spend and be thorough in your invoice review and processing
  • Set minimum expectations for applications in order to be considered
  • Be careful with pre-populated physician applications which can lead to unintended false information that may hinder credentialing
  • Be strategic with the number of contracted locums tenens agencies.  Results showed that organizations with 3 or more contracted agencies noted significant time increases
  • Provide recruitment staff with good tools and systems
  • Communicate regularly with agency and credentialing teams —consider a weekly huddle lead by recruitment team
