Over the last several years, many healthcare organizations have seen their levels of Physician and Advanced Clinical Provider engagement and satisfaction decrease. Nationally there has been an increase in Physician turnover while Advanced Clinical Provider turnover has been more sporadic over the last several years. These national trends have been consistent with the environment within Carolinas HealthCare System’s Medical Group. Carolinas HealthCare System Medical Group decided they need to take a more active, systematic approach in reversing these trends. Carolinas HealthCare System constructed a unique engagement and satisfaction strategy to start the process of culture change within their Medical Group with the ultimate goal of increase engagement and satisfaction while also reducing their turnover rates. During this session, you will learn more about the approach Carolinas HealthCare System has taken to address these concerns. In addition to the case study, this session will provide a general retention construct that can be used by attendees to establish their own program. Lessons learned from other hospitals, health systems, and physician groups will also be shared.

Elizabeth K. Cook is a Senior Management Associate for Carolinas HealthCare System based in Charlotte, NC. Elizabeth has over 10-year experience working in the ambulatory and acute care healthcare settings and has been at Carolinas HealthCare System for the last 6 years in various capacities. Her current primary job responsibilities are provider analytics and provider retention throughout the Carolinas HealthCare System. Elizabeth is currently the President of OAR, which is an onboarding and retention chapter within ASPR. She has her Master’s degrees in Public Health and Healthcare Administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
Allison McCarthy is an industry leader in the areas of medical staff development, physician recruitment, onboarding and relations, and physician focused research. She has facilitated numerous client engagements through physician needs analysis projects; physician recruitment and retention program advancements; and strategies targeting the physician customer.
Named as the “Strategist of the Year” by the New England Society for Health Care Strategy, Allison is a frequent speaker, presenting at conferences sponsored by several state and regional health care strategy associations. She is the author of A Practice Development Primer and Leader’s Guide to Physician Recruitment, in addition to publishing white papers and articles for several health care journals, newsletters and other publications.
Allison has a Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Health Care Management along with a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Management. Prior to consulting, she was the Director of Physician Services and Network Development at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Vice President of Physician Services at The Malden Hospital.
